On the weekend of January 6-8, the Juvenile Boys & Girls lodged at Regina,SK and motored to Odessa, a small village 30 miles southeast, to challenge some of Canada's top Juvenile Broomballers.
This yearly tournament, hosted in Odessa, was an optimum opportunity for the Manitoba coaches to familiarize themselves with new players. Preparations and selections will be made during the next few months for Nationals, slated for April 11-14, at the Raymond Bourque Arena, in St.Laurent, near Montreal, Quebec.
The young ladies battled 3 teams in their division placing 3rd after the Rd. Robin action recording 2 losses, one in overtime and a 3 -1 win over Estevan. Team captain, Jocelyne Robidoux motivated her teammates in the Bronze game limiting shots on net. Goaltender April Hiller played outstanding, between the pipes closing the door on her opponents. Team Manitoba Michelle Ferguson blasted a bullet pass Estevan's net minder late in the opening period, which would prove to be the game winner. The All Stars earned Bronze medals after a hard fought and exciting match.
Our Juvenile Boys' team collided against 4 teams for medallions. Placing 4th, Team MB advanced to the Bronze game with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses. Manitoba stormed out of the gate pounding Balgonie edging their adversaries 1-0 after the opening frame. Then, the Clipppers struck back scoring twice early in the final period. Manitoba continued tob last the Clippers equalizing the match in the dying minutes of regulation sending the game in overtime. As the ball was dropped in OT, Manitoba had a man advantage for yet another 90 seconds. After a quick line change, team captain Reg Robidoux torpedoed to the opposing net, blasting a shot toward Balgone's net minder. Reg gained control of his rebound, swooping the ball to Sam Massinon on the top edge of the crease. With a wrist flip shot, Massinon beat the goal tender causing the Manitoba's bench to explode. The All Stars claimed Bronze in an outstanding team performance.
Both Manitoba teams were rewarded with Bronze Medallions competing against Canada's elite athletes at Odessa, SK. The athletes also picked up Team All Stars awards for their efforts.
